Discover the Dartmoor Story logo

Saturday, 19 October 2024 at 11:00 - 15:00

Join us for some free woodland fun for all the family. Discover traditional woodcraft skills and find out what makes Dartmoor's woodlands so special. There will be lots of hands on activities aimed at children and their families to have a go at. Drop in through the day to take part.

Activities will include

  • Make your own Witches besom broom to go haunting with. Using bundles of birch twigs we'll make a proper  broom which you can go haunting with and then use to sweep up the leaves in the garden. We'll be operating a queuing system to help manage the activity and use of tools
  • Whittle a wizards wand and cast an Autumn Spell. We'll be using whittling knives so group size will be limited and parental supervision will be required. This is sure to be a popular activity so to run it safely there will be timed slots through the day - pick up a ticket when you arrive to book your place on the day
  • Be a woodland protector- make your own wooden champions medal to show you care
  • Before electricity "bodgers" wood make chair legs out in the woods using a foot powered pole lathe. Watch one in action and maybe have a go
  • Learn more about the mammals who live in these amazing woods
  • Death, decay  and deadwood. Explore the rotten side of the woods and look for fungi and minibeasts who recycle dead wood
  • Get arty with charcoal with our local artist and unleash your creativity
