Higher Uppacott Guided Visits

Higher Uppacott Guided Visits

Higher Uppacott public programme of visits 2024

The summer programme of visits has now finished but you can still enjoy a tour of the house by booking on two tours which are being run as part of the Dartmoor Walking festival.

A yuletide visit to Higher Uppacott 2pm - 4pm

Join guides Liz and Simon for a seasonal guided tour of this Grade 1 listed Dartmoor Longhouse a building which is of rare and national importance. A longhouse was a building in which both animals and humans lived and Higher Uppacott still retains its shippon (where the animals lived) in an unaltered state. Take a journey on the development of comfort as you see how this building was adapted and changed over the centuries to reflect changes in the way people lived and consider its setting within the wider historic landscape.

After the tour enjoy some (non-alcohol) mulled punch and a mince-pie.

Higher Uppacott has undergone substantial conservation works to improve access, understanding and condition of this grade I listed building and its former historic farmstead site. This work was funded in the main by the Moor Than Meets the Eye Heritage lottery project. Find out more about this and other  work which has been taking place on these tours.

Meeting Point: Please meet at Higher Uppacott where you will be directed by the guide as to where to park as space is limited. From Ashburton take the Dartmeet/Two bridges road, Higher Uppacott is located approx. ½ mile from Poundsgate just past the Methodist chapel (on your let).

Advisory: Please be aware when booking that there are several steps, low beams and uneven floors within the longhouse. There is limited heating so please dress warmly.

Dogs: Sorry no dogs (except assistance dogs).

Duration: Tours take approx. 1 ½ hrs.

Suitability for Children: Visits to Higher Uppacott are probably more suited to children 8+

Cost: Adults £6.00, Children 14 & under free

Group bookings

Private Group booking

If you have a group of more than 6 who would like to visit Higher Uppacott, then it is possible to arrange a privately booked tour on a date and time of your choice (subject to availability of tour guides). The tour takes approximately 1.5 hours and can accommodate up to 20 people. Groups of less than 6 may join the public guided visits.

School Groups

Higher Uppacott is a good location to support studies about how people lived in the past - their settlements, history and traditional buildings.

Suitable for Key Stages 2, 3 and 4. Groups of 30 (one class) can be accommodated. However, due to the nature of the building, the class would need to be split. One group would be led on a tour of the house, whilst the other would be involved in education activities based around the outside of the house, or in the shippon. Each group would need supervision by staff from the visiting school. Access by large coaches is not possible only by small buses and minibuses.
